You CAN make your own cert.  My linux installations all include the
software for creating your own cert.  And in fact if you've got a RaQ3
or above, and you don't own a cert, you should install your own cert on
the admin server so you'll have encryption on your administration.

But if you use your own cert the browser will tell the person browsing
to the site that the cert issuer is "unknown".
