hi,
At 08:33 28.06.01, you wrote:
Samba has me pretty scared from a security point of view, won't be trying

rsync is not samba. rsync is just rsync. :)
i personally really like that tool as it can copy one partition to another
partition (we're having a second server with an identical hard disk and are
syncing those disks once a day with rsync). additionally you can use rsync
over ssh and that way you can use public key authenticated. generally, this
is a much better solution than using ftp (and lots easier to firewall)
I just run a Cron task which runs a perl script I wrote which in turn tars
and gzips all my sites then FTPs them up to another server.
that's enough for most cases. what else do you want?
I also scheduled an FTP backup through the Raq interface which backs up the
whole server (about 3Gb at the moment) and FTPs it up to yet another server
once a week. Speaking of which has anyone ever done a comprehensive analysis
of what this "full system" backup leaves out?
look into the backup.cgi, the parameters just at the beginning exactly show
what gets backupped and what not.
I.e. am I kidding myself if I
think that if my server dies horribly I can just get another one, do a
restore and get back up and running?
that never worked for us. if you have some money, buy a second hard disk
and mirror the first one regularly. especially with raq3 and later models
this works fine, you can even boot the server from the second disk just
through the lcd panel.
