The following works quite well (as per WebhostingTalk.com):

Insert this line in your httpd.conf (mainsite)
AliasMatch ^/newsite/([^/]+)(/(.*))? /home/sites/$1/web/$3
Then restart apache - after that, you can access it with:
www.originaldomain.com/newsite/www.newdomain.com

I've done it for another domain on the server (i.e. not for the mainsite) - it
works like a charm ;-)
