The simple answer is yes the RaQ will handle emails and virtual domain fine.
Things to know ;)
1. virtual site limites are set to 200(ish) website per box (technically
they could handle more, but i wouldn't bother)
2. Users limits don't appear to be a problem so you could easily give out
user@xxxxxxxxxxxx email aliases with forwarding
3. Don't give out shell access
4. Install SSH .PKG ASAP and don't use telnet!
5. forwarding emails tags the username onto the top of every automated
reply, I spoke to cobalt about this but they don't seem to fussy about the
fact that they're giving out 50% of the username/password combo - oh well!
6. Its very so to add lots of users/sites via the GUI althought RaQ3/4 have
a commandline tool to help
7. Securtiy is a requirement not an option, if you don't want some to switch
your business off (aka scriptkiddies) know what your doing 100% or leave it
to the pros -
8. it isn't easy and can be very stressful trying to provide 100% 24x7x365
performance on any budget.
9. Back everything up as if your business depended on it, goes one day it
will!
But thats about it - have fun!

Subject: [cobalt-developers] Email for ISP on RAQ3?
I'm thinking about becoming an ISP in my area and would like to use my RAQ3
for email and personal webpages. All of the dialup and such will be handled
through a third party, but email and any hosting will be up to me. I want to
know if it is feasible to use the Raq in this situation, it seems ideal, but
I don't want to over load it with too many users. Besides disk space, would
there be any other limiting factors that I should be aware of using it as
such?
I understand it depends on the number of other sites and load and other
factors, but I have determined that the existing 3 sites are trivial with
regards to system resources. I don't plan on allowing any telnet access and
FTP maybe out of the question also. Does any one have any ideas to help me
in my endeavor?
I'm particularly worried that *if* I get a large number of customers, how
would I keep all of them on one server? If I need to add another server just
for email how can this be done? Is the cobalt platform the correct place to
start, I want scalability, is it possible, and at what cost?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, rather it theoretical or derived
from actual experience.
What about some kind of LDAP solution?
Thank you,
Alan Dunbar
