OK, I found it.
The hard drive was full.
I had been running VNC, and it logged 900+ mb of errors. Once the drive was
full, logins no longer function.
What a scare, I thought I had been hacked. I guess this is one reason to
keep telnet running. By using telnet, I was able to look around until I
found the guilty party.
