what is the watchdog timer?
A watchdog timer or COP (Computer Operating Properly) timer is a hardware
resource in the CPU that resets the system to its power on state if the
system locks up. Essently the COP resets the countdown everytime an
instruction is fetched (it varies according to manufacturor, I speak in
Motorola). If the timer reaches zero before the next instruction is
fetched...the system is reset.
