Here is the fix...

as root cd to /usr/lib
then create a link to /usr/share/terminfo

ln -s /usr/share/terminfo .

Installed Security: ncurses Update 3.0.1 RaQ2-All-Security-3.0.1-8747.pkg
and now my I get a message saying
"cannot openterm cap file Cannot open termcap file
'vt220' not known. Available builtin terminals are:
    builtin_ansi
    builtin_xterm
    builtin_iris-ansi
    builtin_dumb
defaulting to 'ansi'
when trying to use the "vi" editor?.  ????

I think this is a could be a patch problem...
