Re: [cobalt-developers] Raq3 and Xwindow surprise with Oracle

Thanks for the help... I'm finally understanding how this x-window actually
works. We decided to try VNC, because it can be used via a browser and the
internet. For anyone that's interested, VNC is available at
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/. Their comments re browser is under
"Getting Started", and its reproduced it here:

-- Using a web browser as a viewer
--
-- The VNC servers also contain a small web server. If you connect to this
-- with a web browser, you can download the Java version of the viewer,
-- and use this to view the server. You can then see your desktop from any
-- Java-capable browser! (unless you are using a proxy to connect to the
-- web). The server listens for HTTP connections on port 5800+display
number.
--
-- So to view display 2 on machine 'snoopy', you would point your web
browser
-- at: http://snoopy:5802/
--
-- The applet will prompt you for your password, and should then display the
-- desktop.

We found that the VNC installation went smoothly, although we had an issue
with Xauth which resolved itself <phew!> after we installed
xfree-3.3.5-3-test.tar.gz.

Last night we were able to successfully log in to the VNC x-window server
from the browser, so now we just have to try running a program through it.

We're back on track to our real gaol, which is to install Oracle8i.

Many thanks, Max Hugen ;-)

Max,

All you need to do is identify what IP address you have for the current
session
and
set your DISPLAY variable after you telnet in.

Go into a DOS window and type netstat -r, you should see your IP address on
the
first line
under interface. But, if this machine is Win 98 how are you going to display
X
Windows?
You will have to load an X Windows server program before you will see
anything.
