Don't take my advice as the final word, because I don't use a RAQ, but with
Linux and PHP you'll cause the least number of conflicts if you simply follow
the instructions in the INSTALL file of PHP4. Of course, I'm a strong
proponent of compiling vs. RPM unless the RPM originates directly from the
developer of the software. I'll quote a gent (who will remain nameless) who's
using GroupIT, who now works for Debian (formerly for Redhat):
"take the source, much more easier than to fight hours/days with
redhat failed deps. :) Redhat, the modern M$-Company :-) but i'll say nothing
more, promised. i worked about 4 Years with Redhat, i got all times "headache"
Since we give in our Company also Redhat Support, my headache will
never end :)"
His first language is German, and his english isn't perfect, but you get the
idea!
PHP4 is a seamless upgrade. But! There are two issues. One is that the mime
type is now "application/x-httpd-php" and no longer
"application/x-httpd-php3". Another is that the configuration file
"/usr/local/lib/php3.ini" no longer is used; PHP4 looks for
"/usr/local/lib/php.ini".
