I don't know the Apache version, is the one that comes with the RaQ 3
(Cobalt Linux release 5.0 (Pacifica) Kernel 2.2.14C5 on an i586), since I
deleted the access.conf all password protected directories display the
Authorization Requiered message but without prompting for username and
password.
I need the original files that come with the RaQ?
Thank you for your help.
Daniel

How old/which version is apache?
Newer apache versions don't even use them, the location details in
httpd.conf sometimes even point to /dev/null!
Here's my settings:
# In the standard configuration, the server will process this file,
# srm.conf, and access.conf in that order. The latter two files are
# now distributed empty, as it is recommended that all directives
# be kept in a single file for simplicity. The commented-out values
# below are the built-in defaults. You can have the server ignore
# these files altogether by using "/dev/null" (for Unix) or
# "nul" (for Win32) for the arguments to the directives.
#
ResourceConfig /dev/null
AccessConfig /dev/null
