Hi Blake,
Are you familiar with Majordomo,
which should already be installed on your server?
It works quite well.
I have not reviewed the Raq3 software and invite correction,
however, majordomo is installed and configured well on the raq2.
Mailing lists can be added through the httpd interface by the site
administrator.
FYI, Majordomo is managed by commands received via email, and
custom cgi's can be built on site for admin, using these email commands
which we have done successfully for years.
to check yours simply send an email addressed as
" majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx "
where the recipient is the actual Domain name of the server itself.
In the body of your email simply type
" help " ( no asterisks...)
It can also be configured for custom list management.
This does require telnet access and som familiarity
with the sendmail configuration on your Cobalt.
It isn't terribly mystifying but, as usual, care should be taken
whenever modifying and using Sendmail, which can become mystifying.
Info on using and configuring Majordomo and links can be found at
http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/
This would certainly handle the load, properly configured.
Re: your current problem:
I'm not thoroughly familiar with the "Subscibe me" setup,
but possible causes are:
some syntax issue involved with the creation or
the writing/updating of the email list file may be causing the faulty emails.
Upstream DNS issues.
Active collision and overload whereby the attempt to send is only returning
the error message by default because it is unable to complete the
transmission, etc.
Actually having a lot of bad addresses, and possibly caused by pranksters.
for example, can I enter " fuck @fuckyou.com" into your list and be accepted?
It is not clear from whom you are receiving these "bounce" responses,
and before you proceed, this should be worked out.
For example If they are all from one source, remote servers for recipients,
then bad addresses or operator syntax is a place to look.
If they are from multiple sources, say your own server and remote servers,
then you have this course. Until this is sorted and clarified,
you may have too many places to work, and no conclusion.
A note regarding your active monitor issue:
You may be overloading the mail server with accumulative activity that
should be stopped.
Your mail server wiill attempt can attempt to resend this "bad" mail
if some of the issues above are involved.
check your "top" state and see what's happening.
Then check your mail files for anything cached heavily,
and also check for any other anamolous file ordering or addition that might
be occuring.
Also check to see if your server rebooted at or about this time.
If you have any of these issues, stop your mail server with
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail stop
then clear out the mail queues of the reduntant activity, then restart with
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail start
and observe the activity from there.
I hope some of this helps.
If you want more specific custom help on using Majordomo as the MLM,
write me directly.
I'm wearing out the keys here. sorry.
Manana,
Jessica

Are there any limitations/restrictions on how many e-mails can be sent out
on a mailing using a perl script/sendmail on a RaQ3?
I used a free script called "Subscribe Me" to send out my newsletter (1200)
subscribers and half of the mailing bounced back at the server as
undeliverable or address unknown, etc.
I checked with some of the subscribers and they received the mailing with
no problems, myself included.
It also set off the Active Monitor, indicating a CPU overload.
Is it possible that I could actually have 100's of bad addresses?
Otherwise, can anyone suggest a script that wouldn't overload the server?
Thank you.
Blake
