in my opinion, you should take your system off the net (not only to
examine and clean it, but to prevent attacks, scans, etc. from your
compromised host against others), make a full backup for further
examination, then reinstall it completely (repartitioning + recovery
cd).

i have the intention to write a basic security faq when i have time; i
don`t have it yet :-(
(as this is a somewhat complex argument, even for basic things)
