[cobalt-developers] HELP! Catastrophic Failure - Good,Bad,Ugly
- Subject: [cobalt-developers] HELP! Catastrophic Failure - Good,Bad,Ugly
- From: William Leeke <wleeke@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

All,
**Please CC: me - wleeke@xxxxxxxxxxxxx**
Equip: Raq1
Kernel:
[root@qbert /root]# sum /mnt/raq/boot/vmlinux.gz
59675 422
[root@qbert boot]# ls -l /mnt/raq/boot/vmlinux.gz
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 431639 Apr 12 14:59
/mnt/raq/boot/vmlinux.gz
Short ver:
No matter WHAT kernel (using 2.0.34C52_SK currently),
I use, I cant boot past this line (from Console)
...
Apr 9 13:53:36 blueprint kernel: VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
readonly.
The disk blurps and then nothing...ever. I should get something like
this
-> Apr 9 15:12:16 localhost kernel: Adding Swap: 130748k swap-space
(priority -1)
fdisk output - mounted as /dev/hdb from Qube1.
Disk /dev/hdb: 15 heads, 63 sectors, 15907 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 945 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 1 1 1023 483367 83 Linux native
/dev/hdb2 1024 1024 1301 131355 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdb3 1024 1302 4095 1320165 83 Linux native
/dev/hdb4 4096 4179 15907 5541952+ 83 Linux native
As you can see I took the oportunity to re-partition the disk a
little.
Did use cfdisk (m) maximize i.e. NC for boot partition.
Not marked bootable (same as Qube1)
kernel is located @ < 1024 -
Any thoughts??
Im completely stumped. Im looking for reasons why the kernel STOPs where
it does. I thought about 'rdev' and looked into it a little. (kernel
doesn't know where swap device is), but on second thought this would be
kinda rediculous w/ a kernel from All-Kernel_mips-1.0.pkg. My next
thought was a bad disk block at 1 or 0 ... ooooh! Ouch.
Reasons which involve disk bootability or (eeek!) disk controllers or
board or memory failures are most likely IMHO.
#
# First the BAD. This is where the poor little raq1 died!
