RE: [cobalt-developers] Password File Lock - Samba

First I would like to thank both Robert & Duncan for replying to my email
and providing some insight into the problem. It helped!
There were files in the /etc/locks/ program, but deleting those files did
not remedy the problem... I was still not able to create a new user (and
still got the message "password file lock")

The problem turned out to be the samba setup.  Even though I followed the
"unsupported" samba setup document to the letter... it occurs when you do
the suggested change of 'smb' => 1 (enabling windows file sharing) in the
Product_raq.pm file.   Just deleting the files in /etc/locks/ and keeping
the smb => 1, gave the error message "cannot lock /etc/smbpasswd"
To get around the problem, I made smb => 0 (disabling windows file sharing)
and then had to modify both the encrypted password field in /etc/smb.conf in
the GLOBAL setting to "no" and then modify my local computer's windows
registry to send plain text passwords.
THEN, I was able to connect to the cobalt and share directories.

My next step of course is to figure out how to enable the encrypted password
option for obvious security reasons.  I would appreciate any suggestions...

check "/etc/locks" for any files.  It should be ok to remove anything in
this directory, but check their last access and/or creation dates to be
sure.  The cobalt ui/backend should properly clean up after itself, but if
it is interrupted or crashes then it may have left some lock files around.

If this problem persists then could you detail what the knowledge base
steps were?
