Re: [cobalt-developers] Unpacking the backup files?

hi there,

just to complete this:

Unfortunately, the Qube2 backup file has some extra material inserted and
so, the above technique does not work directly. Jeff Bilicki supplied the
following perl script for overcoming this difficulty - I haven't used it
myself.

we used that perl script on many backup archives of the raq2 (yes, it's working there, too) and of the raq3 (you have to change %%END_INDEX to another value... dunno at the moment). it produces an out.tar.gz that you can simply unpack.

i really (REALLY!!) know how important this little tool is because we had MANY cases where a backup file can't be restored through the interface. and i think it is a joke that cobalt itself produces such a script because that shows that they well know their backup function isn't really working.

a little excerpt from a mail of jeff bilicki he just sent to me...

<snip>
   Yes, Cobalt is aware of the current issues regarding backup and
restore, we are working hard to reslove them. We have tasked an
engineer with fixing/rewriting the backup and restore code. His name is
Johnathan <jtraxler@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> and I have cc'd him on this email.
</snip>

i hope one day we'll have a good and simple backup function - at the time, this isn't the case. seems to be hacked together in 15 minutes. please don't blame cobalt for that. i've already done this. ;-)

cya, jonas.
