Re: [cobalt-developers] Differences Between Raq 2 and Raq3

Hey Luis,

I think Cobalt's own sales literature sums it up best (at
http://trueblue.cobalt.com/media/raq3salestraining.ppt in the reseller
section), indicating that the supportable lifespan of the MIPS-based RaQ 2
will decline rapidly in the next 6 months. Cobalt HAS to have a solid base
of x386 product out there to keep their leg up on the other appliances
that will be due out in the next two months from IBM, Compaq, and even
Dell.

For this reason, the pricing on the RaQ 2 line will drop dramatically, as
will the RaQ 3 as other competitive products are introduced. That doesn't
do much for us out on the bleeding edge, but it will be worth it in the
long run.

I got the LOW end RaQ 3 (32Mb 8.4Gb single 10/100, no SCSI or PCI) unit
and maxed it out with 256Mb of RAM and an additional internal 37Gb drive.
It gave me a great intro price (less than $2000) into a technology that I
know we HAVE to be working with.

Bottom line is that 90% of the really great stuff out there (PHP3, mySQL,
PostGreSQL, transaction processing, streaming media engines, etc...) will
be built for x386 Linux and probably not for MIPS. These items are the
things you're going to want to add to your products without having to
reinvent the wheel.

If you can't get to the above link for some reason, email me and I will
forward it to you.
