The Cobalt Developer Network is pleased to announce two new technical notes intended for developers who need to create their own kernels for Cobalt servers.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
The Cobalt Qube or RaQ ROM will always load a single Linux kernel. Developers who build their own Linux kernels need a spare one in case the kernel that they build is defective. Most software developers will use the Linux kernel that ships with the Cobalt product, and will not need to build one themselves. Also, since the existing kernels fully support the Linux module mechanism, many desired new features, such as plug-in device drivers, can be added as modules to the existing kernel.
OBLIGATORY WARRANTY NOTICE
Replacing the Linux kernel voids your Cobalt software warranty, which just means that our Technical Support folks can't help you once you've replaced the kernel. Makes, sense, right? Cobalt strongly recommends that you build and test your kernel on a non-production system before installing it on a mission-critical system. Again, this is just common sense.
WHERE TO FIND THE TECH NOTES
Please see ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/developer/DeveloperTechnote7-0-0,pdf for information on adding a kernel to Cobalt Networks' MIPS-based server appliance Family.
See ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/developer/DeveloperTechnote6-1-1.pdf for information on adding a kernel to the RaQ 3 server appliance family.

Gordon Garb
