Re: [cobalt-developers] Question to all Developers

I have been watching the e-mails posted to this list for quite some time, now. You guys spend an awful lot of time tinkering with the operating system. I get the impression that the default configuration of the Qube does not provide very much functionality. What is it about the Qube that makes it so desirable, in spite of this?

Enrique:

Trying to get an accurate impression of the functionality of the Qube by reading the discussions of engineers intent on doing strange and wonderful things with the system is not appropriate.

This discussion group is used by those of us who want to take Cobalt products and extend them in some manner or other. And we aren't about to waste time or bandwidth talking about what works.

The discussions about adding functionality or reconfiguring the kernel/system is not to suggest that the Qube or RaQ is lacking in functionality as it comes from factory but rather that being based on an open-source kernel makes it an ideal foundation for engineers to extend and build upon.

I am curious because I am considering running my site from my home, instead of having it hosted. The Qube marketing material touts ease of configurability. However, many of the problems addressed by your discussion list does make me wonder.

The Qube marketing material is accurate. You will find setting up the Qube to be trivial and its Linux kernel reliable and robust. Setting up your own Linux system from scratch would be much more time consuming and not necessarily give you any more functionality (indeed probably less unless you know a lot about Linux and how to install/configure the various services). And as for that other operating system, it's simply Not There in comparison.

The Qube will make a fine site server. Go for it!
