Thanks so much for the help, Roger especially.  I believe mysql installed ok, and I am certain php did.  One question regarding this line that showed up in the telnet session after installing one of the mysql rpm's:

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password' (to set mysql admin password)

I tried all sorts of different syntaxes, but it never liked what I entered for new password, citing an unknown command.  Suppose my root password is RYAN and I want the mysql password to be RYAN10.  Can you provide me with the exact syntax I would need to type in?  What I tried without success was:

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u RYAN RYAN10
